Really gripping article Lauren. I mean, very intense. And I'm sure quite emotional overall. My heart goes out the Elbaz family and friends as well, but you chose an incredible respectful path with this -- not jumping on the assumption or hype train or using the "chance" to get more exposure or something. I know from meeting you how caring of a soul you are and it shows.

Well written! Everything you stated is the truth! I saw the video while sitting next to my mom as she was watching the news and I looked up right when he disappeared, not an image I would like to have and one I believe the family wouldn't want to have. Other than this gray cloud I hope you and your husband were able to enjoy your anniversary cruise.

So beautifully written. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sorry to say I watched the video. I clicked play before I could realize what I was doing, like people who stop and rubberneck at the site of a car accident on the side of the road, I couldn't help myself but look. We as a society have become morbidlly curious and desensitized to pain and suffering in others because we see and hear it so often in the media. I'm sorry I watched the video because it was indeed graphic and definitely not the image anyone should be looking at. However, it did snap me out of the quick finger draw we have on social media and it made me realize the true reality. I felt the pain imagining what his family and loved ones must be going through, I felt sad for the life lost and sad for the people aboard this beautiful ship whose vacation memories were instantly darkened by tragedy, especially for those people I saw in the video who were instantly overcome with shock. I feel sad for the person who took the video because he or she has fallen to the same numbness and need to over-share we have sucumbed to. I have to believe they too have realized their error. At least I hope that is the case. Good for you for resisting the urge to share and "report" on social media and thank you again for shining a light on this because the only way we can turn back time and become more emphatetic with our fellow human beings and less absorbed with the images that bombard us daily is by taking the time to pause and think, to be thankful for the life we have and be respectful of the life of others. May this man rest in peace and may his family find their peace with this tragic loss.
