Although it was not the Dalton, my grandfather drove the Alcan in the early 1950’s in an International truck he and a friend converted into an RV. Can you imagine? I think he did it up and back twice. He built a little red shack on the back of this big truck and we called it the tundra shack. This created in me a desire to drive into Alaska but never did. Your trip sounds fabulous.

I drove as far as the Artic Circle Monument with my best friend, Patti. It was the summer solstice, minimal snow. What a great trip! I wanted to go further, and now I know I must go back! Thank you for such a great story and the info.

I loved your blog, I am planning a trip to Alaska w/ my husband for our 25th wedding anniversary & this trip up the Dalton is on MY must do list. We are going in September & have to rent a car, but we are so anxious to do this & see all you have seen & written about. Makes me more excited than ever, and convinces me NOT to cut it out because of the cost of a car rental. We “plan” on driving round trip from Fairbanks to Coldfoot OR Atigun Pass in 1 day due to the rental. Hope to see those Northern lights too. :) Thank-you so much !!

In reply to David. We did not require the use of chains during our trip at all, however it was Mid-October so the snow pack was very slight. I wouldn't expect any snow on the road in May-June, but the conditions will be very rough.

As your car is front wheel drive did you still require chains? If you did require chains were the large trucks using chains? 4×4 vehicles needed chains? During May- June is the highway dry and without snow? Thanks!

Very well done narrative, very accurate! We’ve driviin it twice now (June and July, 24 hours of daylight is so cool) and have saved enough for another windshield so we’re going again! It’s a challenge but so addictive.
