It really is a wonderful road with a rich heritage and legacy. I wish we didn't de-commission so many of our old historic routes in the US.

I just returned home from the Route 66 trip from Chicago to Santa Monica and it was FANTASTIC!!! My friend and I drove the entire route and loved every minute of it. I would be happy to share my experience and suggest various places to visit along the way. Everyone we met on the trip couldn't have been more friendly and helpful with information about the route. We left Chicago on 04/25 and arrived in Santa Monica on Friday 05/02/14 which was just enough time to see everything on our list of "must see's" If you want a great vacation, drive the famous Route 66, especially if you're a "car nut" and enjoy looking at old cars...

I would love to see the northeastern portion of it, but I've heard that most of it is just small frontage road nowadays.

I really, really want to take an extended trip on Route 66. I've been on parts of it in and around Springfield, Ill. The fact the movie "Cars" was made with such a focus on Route 66 was really vital in keeping the road's memory front and center for many. As an historian of sorts I've always known about the road, but having a child who for a while loved that movie, it reminded me of it. I'd love to catch the road where I can in Oklahoma and follow it west (I live in Tennessee). I just don't think I want to slow down in life enough to spend that much of my vacation time driving the road. That's sad, isn't it?

Great post. I'm saving it for future travel inspiration.
