This is so true. I hate that I love Starbucks and their expensive drinks, but at least their wi-fi is super efficient and their environment is great for getting down to work! The same with, unfortunately, McDonalds. We were always happy to see either one when we backpacked Europe. Free wi-fi was a lifesaver!

I’m so sorry to completely disagree. This might be all because I’m a European who sometimes lives in Australia – my coffee taste is probably completely different. I recently went, first time in over 2 years, into a Starbucks in Santiago de Chile, only to use their WiFi to research options for a local data SIM. The coffee: yuk! The place: noisy and crowded. The Wifi: well, okay-ish, not the fastest. But what really bugs me is that at Starbucks I have to pay more to get less coffee…

I agree, coffee is basically the best thing ever! :) While Starbucks isn’t my favorite, I do still really like it! I think I need to get signed up for the gold card–never knew it existed!

Yes, I tend to gravitate to Starbucks when I travel, even though I don’t travel long-term, because I’m a caffeine addict, and I love using free wifi. I don’t travel with a smartphone, but I have an ipod touch, so I’ll pop into a Starbucks every now and then to check my emails and let my friends and family back home know how I’m doing or I’ll look up directions for where I want to go for the day. Funny enough I recently started working a Starbucks a couple months ago. It’s nice because I’m a writer so working there provides me with free coffee and caffeine to support my writing habit, and it supplements my income when writing projects are drying up.

When my husband and I are traveling and need to be online, the first thing we look for is Starbucks. If there isn’t one around, many fast food chains also offer free wi-fi these days, and so do community centers and local libraries (if you don’t mind skipping the coffee/food). But Starbucks is always the first choice, because, as you said, it’s a consistently good experience.

I can so relate. I leave home a few mornings a week to write at Starbucks. It has become my “remote office” For whatever reason all the traffic, the piped in music, seems to help me focus and I am twice as productive there than I am at my home office.
